The fry: It's the kind that a fish-fry lover always hopes to stumble onto,
the kind that restores one's faith in fish fries. It's worth the wait for a table.
Owner Jeff Stoll's classic Wisconsin fish fry starts with family-style servings of excellent hot German potato salad, tangy and smoky with plentiful nuggets of bacon, and lightly creamy coleslaw. Even the light sourdough rye was a cut above, obtained from an area bakery. I'd have been happy just with that, but then there was the fish: fine-flavored cod ($10) in a light beer batter, all you can eat; nice-size bluegill fillets ($11), moist beneath the batter. And a lovely, thin potato pancake - pan-fried until crisp outside and tender within, flavored with onion and parsley, and a bit of carrot for color. House-cut fries are an option, too. Stolley's also has fried walleye ($12), baked cod ($11, $12 for Italian baked) and recently added perch ($11). During Lent, the menu adds smelt.
The place: This bar-restaurant that's friendly to bikers but filled with families is visible from I-94 in Lake Country. Inside it looks like a North Woods tavern, with its knotty pine paneling; sports pictures and beer signs supply the decoration. There's a small dining room with 10 tables, seating 45.
